What Is Refuse and Resist! The Artists Network (AN) is part of Refuse & Resist!, a national resistance organization that was formed in 1987 by lawyers, artists, activists, students and other youth who saw an alarming trend in the U.S. toward greater state control and repression. R&R! has built resistance in many unusual ways. It is unique in its approach to bringing together a wide variety of people to oppose the dominant national agenda of repression, punishment, and imposition of traditional patriarchal morality. R&R! has always included artists in its ranks, contributing to its creative, non rote, and colorful approach to resistance. By 1997, the artists and arts presenters involved in R&R! felt that the impact on the national climate could be amplified through the creation of a distinct organization of people in the arts, allied to R&R! In consultation with individuals inside and outside of R&R!, the Principles of the AN were forged and chapters were set up in New York and Los Angeles. |
