GLEN E. FRIEDMAN
photographer

From www.burningflags.com: Glen E. Friedman, considered one of the most important photographers of his generation, became well known for working with such rebellious artists as Fugazi, Black Flag, Ice-T, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C, KRS-1, and Public Enemy, as well as old school skateboarders like: Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, Duane Peters, and Stacy Peralta, among others. Many of his photographs are recognized as the subjects' definitive portraits. His graphic documents of the movement reveal the science of defiance upon which all are based. Friedman's photos reflect the spirit of progression and angst that defined an era. Not only was he in the right places at an extraordinary number of appropriate times, Friedman has helped define the moment and movements he was caught up in. His process was much more incendiary than it was documentary. According to Henry Rollins "The bottom line is that he was there at the beginning of so much cool stuff in so many different areas it's not funny."

DOGTOWN - The Legend of the Z-BOYS

Glen's newest book "DOGTOWN - The Legend Of The Z-BOYS" will be officially released on March 25th! He has been working on it for the last two years off and on, at the same time he was working on the documentary film "DogTown and Z-Boys." It's co-authored with long time friend and mentor C.R. Stecyk III, edited and designed by Friedman. In an 8" x 8" hardcover format at 240 pages, it includes all the infamous original DogTown articles by Stecyk and over 100 pages of never before seen GEF images that were re-discovered during the making of the film. As far as the film "DogTown and Z-Boys" is concerned, having no "piece" of the film but none the less putting all his heart into it, Glen's official credit as Co-Producer and Creative Consultant, barely explain the major influence he had on this feature length documentary. Besides coming up with the idea to have Sean Penn narrate and then going out and getting him to do it, those who know Glen best can see where his other marks were and weren't made in story, and music, as well as the obvious photo contributions.

The film was shown publicly for the first time at the Sundance film festival last year where it won the audience choice award for best documentary, as well as several other internationally respected festival awards since. The film was commercially released in New Zealand and Australia on January 3rd. It's official release for the U.S. is April 26th.
