Report of Friday, October 5 Performance:

on friday, october 5th, in Times Square our group staged its third performance of Our Grief Is Not a Cry for War. we numbered at least 150 people and lined both long sides of the triangle. photos of last night's performance are in a folder (Times Square October 5) at: http://photos.yahoo.com/ourgriefisnotacryforwar

Earlier Performance report:

At 12 noon Saturday, over 100 artists all wearing black filed onto Union Square at 14th Street in New York City where many people have been gathering for the last 10 days to grieve and to try to make sense of what happened on September 11.

A hush fell over the crowd at Union Square as the artists took their places in a semi-circle. For one hour they stood in silence wearing dust masks and placards silk-screened with "OUR GRIEF IS NOT A CRY FOR WAR."

The response to this performance was electric, many people coming up to take stickers, find out who these people were, and thank them. Some were in tears.

The performance happened again at Times Square and it has been on the news in Athens and Dublin.

The group who organized the performance were artists in film, video, visual art, theater, dance, spoken word. They do not want their grief to be used as a justification for war, attacks on Arabs and Muslims, and new repressive laws or clampdowns. More artworks and performances are being planned.

A group of artists in New York, including some people in the Artists Network, have been meeting in the wake of the World Trade Center disaster. We agreed that the top priority is to put out a message as widely and as quickly and compellingly as possible which opposes the moves to war and the attacks on the Arab people including in this country. To that end, we have come up with two sayings:

Our grief is not a cry for war!

ISLAM is not the enemy. WAR is not the answer. Break the cycle. Pass it on . . .

They are available as PDF files in several formats, from 8 1/2 X 11" pages suitable for postering to smaller sizes suitable for printing out on stickers.

You can download them from: http://www.freespeech.org/fsitv/html/stickers . Please print them out, get them up, and pass on the URL as widely as possible -- right away. And if you want to connect with us, write at this email address: rnrarts@hotmail.com
