Highways Performance Space Teams Up with Performance Community to present, The Gathering: An Alternative Response

Santa Monica, CA - Highways Performance Space is pleased to announce the presentation of THE GATHERING: AN ALTERNATIVE RESPONSE, a multidisciplinary performance event conceived by Highways artistic director Danielle Brazell in collaboration with the local performance community. THE GATHERING will be presented for two evenings featuring man of Southern CaliforniaÕs most influential community based-artists including; Keith Mason, Leilani Chan, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Lauren Hartman, Denise Uyehara Sherwood Chen, Barbara T. Smith, Leigh Grode, Joan Spitler, Katherine Griffith, Tre Temperilli, Michael Sakamoto, Rochelle Fabb, Pat Payne, among others to foster a creative space for the general public to investigate an alternative response to September 11th and subsequent events.

Incorporating solo autobiographical, dance, installation and durational approaches to performance, THE GATHERING removes the audience chairs, the separation and the distance between artist and spectator to create a seamless performance experience. Each of the 15 artists will present a five to seven minute piece addressing one of the key issues in the events of recent weeks. In addition, four artists will present site-specific durational works that unfold simultaneously throughout the evening.

Not since the culture wars of the mid 90Õs has a coalition of this size and diversity joined together to address a common cause. THE GATHERING is a social, artistic and humanitarian response comprised of individual artists dedicated to sharing their unique perspective and vision to a propagandized public.

Highways Performance Space and Gallery is southern CaliforniaÕs preeminent venue for gay, lesbian, alternative and community based performance and visual art. Its mission is to develop and present innovative performance and visual art, interaction among people of diverse cultural identities and foster a critical dialogue among artists concerned with social issues and the communities they serve.

THE GATHERING IS NOT: A call to war A call for peace

It is a performance gathering, a coalition of artists, healers, shamans, community activists and independent intellectuals coming together to engage, provide information and exchange perspectives on the extraordinary events of the past few weeks.
