Broken
Arrow Records has produced a CD entitled Not In Our Name, an all-star
compilation that will benefit the Not in Our Name project. The project
showcases musical contributions from a host of well-known and highly
respected artists. Highlights include the title track from Ani DiFranco's
new album, a rare remix from Michael Franti & Spearhead, a live
Ozomatli cut, and recent releases from Charlie Hunter and Les Claypool.
The set also features a new recording of Jonatha Brooke's "War";
an unreleased collaboration between Latin jazz pianist Omar Sosa,
producer Greg Landau (Susana Baca, John Santos) and vocalist Manny
Martinez (Los Mocosos), and a song from Shana Morrison (Van Morrison's
daughter) co-written with Narada Michael Walden. The trendsetting
world-beat group the Looters reunited to remix their immigration
camp tale "Manzanar", and two new voices make stunning debuts: breaking
R&B talent Martin Luther, who's currently on tour with the Roots,
and Garrin Benfield, accompanied by Bonnie Raitt's band.
The
disc package exhibits poignant photography from Iraq by embedded
journalist Evan Wright (Rolling Stone) and from Afghanistan by Alexandra
Boulat (National Geographic). Proceeds from the sale of the CD will
be donated to Not In Our Name. This will be the first in a series
of compilations planned to benefit the organization.
Broken
Arrow is a new independent record label and production company.
It is headed by Thad Wharton, who also developed and produced the
compilation. Wharton previously started and ran Monster Music Records
(Shana Morrison, Gene Clark, Midnight Voices, the Looters), a division
of Monster Cable Products, Inc.
